These exam centres have either taken external candidates in the past, or have indicated that they would consider it.

Please feel free to add or edit information - we rely on the home-ed community to keep this up to date. It's easiest to edit if you create a Wikia account first, but you could also just leave a comment below and we'll add any centres mentioned to the main list.

Buckinghamshire Edit

Aylesbury Maple Education Centre- formerly Aylesbury Kip McGrath centre.

The venue is small and the kids felt comfortable; if you have a child who has school related issues they should be comfortable here. Will accommodate most boards and papers.

Local home-educators have been using this exam centre for many years. Some really like it and recommend it and others have had bad experiences, such as lack of information and even being entered for the wrong exam or given the wrong exam paper. As with any exam centre, you need to double-check all entry details, and ensure your child knows to ask for help if they think there is a mix-up on the day.

Aylesbury Grammar School is accepting PCs at £120 per subject. The hitch is that they need the application in by 15th December and they may not accept the application. It depends on what it is you are wanting your child to sit.

Cambridgeshire Edit

All boards. Efficient. £125 per summer I/GCSE, £135 winter (lower numbers so invigilation costs higher).

  • Abbey College, Ramsey

Accepts private candidates as long as they are at least 16 years old. Charges the exam board fee plus an admin fee (which in Summer 2014 was £50). Very efficient, organised and helpful.

  • Ely - The Kings School

They say they will try to accommodate any requests, we've sat exams from CIE and OCR so far.

Essex Edit

The Bromfords School in Wickford, SS12 - really helpful exams officer, will take candidates for all written exams, for AQA, Edexcel, OCR and CIE, for GCSEs, IGCSEs and A-levels - generally written papers only, although sometimes other things can be arranged. She can sometimes help with access arrangements, although this can be very time-consuming and difficult to arrange. Keeps costs as low as possible - usually the exam board fee plus £10 per paper invigilator fee, and a one-off admin charge of £20. Please contact Sharon Pomford on pomfords@bromfords.essex.sch.uk or phone 01268 471201 ext 246 .

Palmer's College in Grays, Essex, RM17 5TD. - accepts external candidates at low cost, but ONLY for the following exams:

  • Edexcel GCSE Maths 1MA0 (ie linear maths)
  • Edexcel IGCSE English Specification B (4EB0)
  • A- levels - written exams only, not sure which subjects.

They will not accept external candidates for any other IGCSEs, even if they're written exams only. This exam centre for external candidates is run as a community service at low cost. The charge is the exam board fee plus a one-off admin fee of £36 per exam series, so if you enter for maths and English, you only pay the one £36 admin fee plus £39 exam fee. Contact 01375 370121 and ask for the Exams Office, or email enquiries@palmers.ac.uk . Confirmed January 2015.

Clacton and Colchester -ACE Learning

Tutorial centre which also offers online tuition for home-ed people. They will accept external candidates for Edexcel written-only exams, GCSE and IGCSE, and, excitingly, they will do ICT practicals. Fees depend on the the exam and how long it takes, number of papers etc, but most GCSEs and IGCSEs are £90 - £130 per qualification as of January 2015. They will accept A-level candidates for written exams only - different fees apply.

Hertfordshire Edit

The Highfield School, Letchworth

Very helpful and accommodating exams officer Pauline Levett who can be contacted at levetp188@highfield.herts.sch.uk.

"We accept limited applications from private candidates. The exam boards that we use are AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and I would only accept applications with these exam boards. We also can only accept applications for qualifications that are 100% written exam – no coursework.

We charge the cost of the exam, as charged by the exam board, plus a £10 admin fee. If the external student will be the only person taking an exam then we also charge for an invigilator at £8.50/hour." (updated July 2016)

Norfolk Edit

Norwich Hellesdon High School are very accommodating and have the nicest and most helpful exam officer.

We found Attleborough Academy Norfolk very helpful. Fees a bit on the high side (it cost us £285 for our son to sit two GCSEs in summer 2015), but have heard of more expensive places! Current exams officer is Christine Watson- she is fairly new (started September 2015), but has been helpful in our enquiries already.

Contact details for Attleborough Academy are: Tel. 01953 452335 (main switchboard)- ask for extension 225; email: cwatson@aan.norfolk.sch.uk; website www.aan.norfolk.sch.uk
